Frequently Asked Questions

Make ReservationAsk a question
Are you a kennel?

We provide pet sitting services in your own home. We believe pets that stay in their own environment are happier and healthier than pets who stay in kennels.

Can I drop off my pet at your place?
We do not offer boarding services at our location. We are a pet sitting service that allows pets to stay in their own environment while you are away.
How can I trust your pet sitters in my home?

Our pet sitters undergo a thorough background check to ensure the safety of your pets and your home. We are also licensed, bonded, and insured, something many other pet sitters can not claim.

Do I get to meet my pet sitter or dog walker?

Absolutely! When you become a client, your pet sitter will meet with you and your pets in your home. The initial meet-and-greet is free of charge as long as you reserve 5 or more visits.

Will I have the same pet sitter or dog walker each time?
Yes! Once you have been assigned a pet sitter or dog walker, your pets will see the same friendly face each time. Of course, if there is an emergency, a backup sitter may visit instead.
I have to leave town on short notice. Can you still provide service?
If you are an established client and have already had a meet-and-greet at your home, we can provide service on short notice subject to availability. Of course, the more advance notice we have, the better. If you are a new client, we require a meet-and-greet in your home before we begin services.
What types of animals do you care for?

We care for just about any type of animal. We have experience caring for dogs, cats, horses, goats, snakes, turtles, reptiles, ferrets, spiders, prairie dogs, mules, donkeys, birds and others. Have a unique animal? Just ask us!

Do you provide service on holidays?

Yes. We are open 365 days per year. We do charge a $10 per day holiday fee on major holidays: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

What are your service areas?

We provide service within a 15 mile radius of both Columbia, SC and Ogden, UT.

Do I have to give you a key to my home?

We ask that you provide 2 keys to your pet sitter or dog walker. Even if you ask us to enter through an electric garage door or keyless entry, we still require keys in the event of a malfunction with the garage door or keyless entry. But don’t worry – your keys are kept in a safe, undisclosed location, and your keys will never be tagged with personal identifying information. You may also chose to use a lock box of your choosing, however we can not be responsible for malfunctioning lock boxes.

How will I know when a pet sitter or dog walker has been to my home?

Our clients have access to an online portal that provides you with instant updates on the status of visits to your home. Once we have completed a visit, we will send you a report card via email and SMS, including pictures! You’ll also have access to real-time status updates in your online customer portal.

What is your cancellation policy?
When we book your services, we reserve exclusive time for you and your pets. Our cancellation policy is as follows: More than 2 week notice: Full Refund. 7-14 days notice: 75% refund. 3-6 days notice: 50% refund. Less than 3 days notice: No refund. Reservations are made to plan our availability to clients. Therefore, clients returning home early will be required to pay for the reserved amount of time scheduled including travel time.
Can I tip my sitter or dog walker?
Tips are by no means require. But if you feel your pet sitter has provided excellent care, tips are certainly appreciated.
How do I pay my bill?

Payment in full is due prior to services beginning. We accept all cash, checks, all major credit cards, PayPal and Bitcoin.

What if I am delayed returning home? Can I extend my service?

All vacation visits are eligible for our emergency and contingency plan. When you return home, we ask that you contact us. If we do not hear from you, we will automatically continue service until we confirm you have made it home safely.

What safety precautions do you take with my dogs while you're walking them?

Your dog’s safety is of the utmost concern to us. First of all, we do not walk your dogs with other dogs in the neighborhood. Your dog gets our undivided attention! Leashes are clipped to a special harness that your dog walker wears around their waist. This ensure your dog will not become separated from your walker. To top it off, we attach a GPS unit to your dog’s collar while on a walk. While we’ve never had to rely on it, the GPS unit ensures a quick reunion in the highly unlikely event that your dog walker and pooch become separated.

I just have a cat. Can you visit every other day/couple times per week?

Our insurance policy requires that we visit your home at least once per day for cats, and at least twice per day for dogs.

I should just hire my neighbor's kid for $5.

We realize our service may not be for everybody. We are a full-time, full-service pet sitting and dog walking company that provides a unique and convenient service for you and your pets.

Our pet sitters and dog walkers have undergone a thorough background investigation, to include employment verification, drug testing and interviews to ensure we hire only the best. Our pet sitters and dog walkers undergo regular training and include topics such as pet first-aid and handling emergencies so you can be sure you are hiring the absolute best.

If you have multiple pets, you’ll find it can be more cost-effective to hire us than to place your pets in a kennel.

How much does this cost?

Our rates are very competitive and can be very cost-effective when you consider you don’t have to drive to the kennel, you don’t have to pick your pets up when you return, and there’s no chance your pet could catch a contagious disease from a kennel.

Just moved here from Colorado and found Away Home & Pet Care and I couldn't be happier. I have 2 pampered cats who can be difficult. Robert was an absolute gem. He had our antisocial cat, Baxter, wrapped around his finger. He made us a plaque with pictures of the cat, it was so thoughtful and nice. I especially enjoyed the pictures he sent each day of the cats and what they were up to. I will definitely use them every time I go out of town. Excellent service, communication and had total peace of mind during our entire vacation. Thank you Robert!

This company and service has been the best that I have ever experienced. We had to find someone to care for our Kitty while the kitties owner had surgery. We had a great meet and greet and have never been more more pleased with this service. They are reliable and they take the best care of your animals.

We were a little nervous about getting a pet sitter for our three cats, two of them seniors, but Robert tamed those fears with his first meet and greet visit. He made friends with our cats and had our very senior cat (16) coming out for pets soon after we left. It was such a relief to enjoy our trip away (2 weeks) and know they were in good hands. We were also concerned about the health of our senior cats with someone else, but they are in good shape and not at all nervous as they would be if they had gone to a kennel. We would definitely employ Robert and Away Home & Pet Care on another vacation.

When we had to drop everything and go out of town we called Away Home and were thrilled that Robert was able to come by so quickly. His appearance and decorum was neat and tidy, very professional. He was very detail oriented, very good with our two dogs and cat. They took to him right away. He took detailed notes on all our pets' needs and we felt confident he would take excellent care of them. The rates were very reasonable for two visits (morning and night), and we loved how he shared a well being report with us from each visit which included a short description of the visit and pictures. When we arrived home we found that Robert also left a fantastic picture collage of our pets. Super cute, and much appreciated. All in all, it's clear that Robert takes pride in going the extra mile, and we will definitely be hiring him for all our future trips. It's so nice, and much less stressful on our pets, to enable them to stay at home while still receiving truly excellent care. Thank you, Robert!

I have been a client of Away Home & Pet Care for nearly two years. They are life savers and I don't know how I could own a dog without their help. I particularly appreciate their flexibility and willingness to adapt to my ever-changing schedule ... as well as the goofy pictures I get from my dog's daily walks.
